The York Public Library is sponsoring a Summer Movie! "The Color Purple" tells the story of Celie, an African American woman dealing with the hardships of living with an abusive husband and living in the American South during the early 1900s. Throughout the movie, female friendships are portrayed as a means for women to summon the courage to tell stories. In turn, these stories allow women to resist oppression and dominance. Relationships among women form a refuge, providing reciprocal love in a world filled with male violence.
