Join Terry Mitman from Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME) as she takes you through a seal’s journey from being stranded to release, and all of the obstacles in between. She will start with seal basics such as: whether it’s normal for them to be out of the water and why you might see a baby on its own, and then dive into when and why seals need our help. You will learn what MMoME is, what they do, the animals they care for, and how you can help.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Terry Mitman with seal

Raised in Maine, and a graduate from Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, Terry Perkins Mitman had spent two decades parenting children in Wisconsin when her mother moved across country to live with her and her family. This led to precious time and unanticipated opportunity which Mitman captures in Living Is for Living: A Caregiver’s Story. After moving with her mother back to Maine, Mitman, who tutors students ages 10-20, has written and illustrated the Douglas the Rabbit Adventure Series, based on stories her dad told when she was a child, and A Seal Named Sunshine, which describes the rescue and rehabilitation of the stranded seal pup she and her spouse found on their daily walk. She is a lifelong animal and nature lover.

Terry was thrilled to return to her hometown of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, after decades away, to live close enough to the ocean to watch the boats, the weather, and the wildlife. But she wasn’t prepared to discover a gray seal pup one cold winter day, right in her front yard. What ensued was a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the response and care provided by Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). She will never forget the sunny spring day when the seal pup was released in Casco Bay. Mitman is excited to share the inspiring work being done by Marine Mammals of Maine (MM0ME) and her growing knowledge of Maine's marine wildlife, thanks to MMoME!
