Join the Maine Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Committee and Southern Maine for Racial Justice for an opportunity to hear candidates share their views on social and racial justice issues, education policy, housing and more. All candidates running for office in York County have been invited to participate. This event will be moderated by educator Jeff Barry with participation by York County High School students.
Jeff Barry is a veteran teacher of Social Sciences at York High School currently completing his 26th year. Over the course of his career, Jeff has taught courses in history (Modern European History, early American History, and 20th Century US History), as well as courses in civics & government, Economics, Sociology, and Media Studies. Jeff previously served as an advisor for the Civil Rights Team and as a community liaison between the CRT and the York Diversity Forum, as an advisor for a student-led volunteer group called Action Team, as a class advisor for several graduating classes, and as a long-time leader of our local Teachers' Association.
Southern Maine for Racial Justice is an advocacy group based in York County organizing for racial and economic equity through collective actions. The group formed in 2020 as part of an Election Defense campaign and continued on with core members Daria Cullen, Denise Spear, and Kathy Bordeleau supporting many initiatives over the years including Restoring the Wabanaki Nations right to Sovereignty, Welcoming New Americans to Maine, Migrant farmworker rights, and Carceral Reform & Citizen Reentry.
The Maine Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee was established in 2022 as a subset of the Maine Democratic Party to ensure anti-racism is core to the MDP platform. It is a permanent committee led by Chair Ellie Sato and Vice Chair Julian Rogers, and made up of individuals with deep expertise in DEIB, committed to guiding the MDP’s internal and external operations from an anti-racism and DEIB lens.
This is a hybrid event with the option of attending via Zoom.
